Those of you that are training - how would you become a ref?

I'm really curious about this. How would you go about becoming a pro wrestling referee? I know you have to do some training and learn how to bump, but after all that how would you even get noticed? It seems like it'd be really hard. Any advice you can give me from what you might have seen or experienced would be really appreciated!

Well, I'm in the UK, but this is what I've learnt...

You do the "referee training" (bumps, acting dumb to cheating etc)... Then usually the company you train with will use you. If other companies need a ref and they ask people you might get booked onto other shows. A lot of the time it's easiest starting out with some small company because if you're one of 2 refs then you'll get used more to gain experience working matches.

Yeah, the group I'm looking to work with has referee training right on their website in the school section. You may have to hunt it down.

It might seem disrespectful towards them... But ref's and managers are easy to train. A lot of companies can have you match ready in a day for those, while wrestling takes months... So just asking locally should give results...

NB - This is based on my work with WAW.

Oh I'm sure it's much easier to train to be a ref. But thanks for the info! There's a local fed here that has a training session before every show, it's really cheap too. Hopefully it doesn't suck. I'm definitely gonna check it out in a few months.

Also, I've seen some really terrible, out of shape indy refs on youtube. No idea how they made it through!
